Before I Got An Owner Part 2
Then one day in December right before Christmas. I saw a calendar and found out about Christmas from a few dogs who were seniors that were given up that had homes. Wouldn’t it be nice to be someone’s present. Well, I was minding myself in my cage, silent as usual when two people came through. One was tall and the other short. They started looking at us and jotting down numbers. They stopped by my cage and through at me. I looked back smelling who they were. One of them was a girl who said that she would paid for a dog for the other human. I looked the other human up and down. Sniffed their scent and was overwhelmed. I began to think this was someone I could spend my time with for the rest of my life! I thought I would give it a shot and came closer to the cage. I looked at them quietly, hoping my calmness would take notice. It did they jotted my number on a list. I was happy inside. They walked away down and around to the other cages. After while caught the scent again. They were making another pass. Numbers were being scratched off. They stopped and looked at me again. I gave a sad pleading looking. They kept my number and left. I was nervous what did that mean. Would I finally get out of here? Then I heard my number being called and I was taken to the waiting room. They were there. I was nervous, I began to sniff everywhere. Other dogs and humans had been here. One of them held a treat in their hand. I slowly approach, not sure what they would do. I edged closer, took the treat from the hand. Then I felt hands stroking my fur coat. They were gentle, not from humans that I had when I was younger. They smelled good. I thought maybe they would treat me good. So, I gave it my best. They started comparing me with another dog. I heard, “I think this one would be better.”
“The other looked smaller and just got done being pregnant.”
“Look, this one likes to lick,” sure I was trying to win them over.
“The other one ignored us and this one eventually came up to us.”
The one who was going to be one owner said, “This is the one. I want this one.”
Did my ears deceive me. Did I hear right. I was finally going to leave this place. I was speechless as I was led back to my cage. I heard from the handlers that couldn’t leave immediately. I was crest fallen. But the reason I couldn’t leave was that they had to do the exit interview. I tried to tell them how I felt about being there but I don’t think they paid much attention to it. I was checked out again by vet and heard schedule the operation for Sunday with pick up Monday. What, operation for what? I found out later that it was spay surgery. After my surgery I was groggy and not feeling myself. I was sleeping in a recovery when I heard that I my new owner showed up along with someone new. The person was older than my new owner and I heard, mom being mentioned. They put a collar which was a little small around my neck and clipped a leash to me. Still groggy I toted outside. My new owner opened a car door and I after what seem like forever, I figured out how t get in. I couldn’t make the seat and chose to lay down on the floor of backseat. With snowflakes flying we drove away from the shelter. That is how I got from there to now a loving home a few days before Christmas!
